Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

To celebrate Earth Week, we headed to the Cascade Recycling Center to learn more about where our recycling goes when it leaves our classroom. We have been trying to minimize our trash in the classroom, learning about why it's important and what's happening to our Earth, graphing our progress to use less/waste less, and finding more ways to take care of Mother Nature.

We met our tour guide, Recycling Rita, and she explained the center to us.
Some recycling sorters hard at work...
Check out how much trash/recycling they work with each day!

We even got to see Leonel's mom at work! What an exciting addition to our trip!We had a great time and it was educational and eye opening for us all.

We left the center chanting, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
In our own words:
**Reduce means to use less. Use your own at your house so you don't waste money/resources to use more. -Juan
**Reuse means use again, like a plastic bottle again and again and again until you can't use it anymore. -Alena
**Recycle means that when you're done with things like cans or bottles, you can throw them in the recycling (without the lid). We do this because if you throw it into the garbage, it doesn't get used for anything else, it just goes in the dump or landfill and eventually we'll run out of room on Earth. -Rowan
---
After the tour, we headed to the local park for lunch and to burn off a little energy.

Ms. Conte with Ms. Denise, a special part of our school family!

Nothing like a little wrestling...

A huge thank you to our super volunteers: Tifen's mom, Juan's mom, Elsie's dad, Cristina's dad, Gunner's mom, and Ms. Denise. We couldn't do it without you!

Mac

We have a new member of our school family...

Mac The Dog! Mac is a sweet chocolate lab that comes in with his owner, Mrs. Anderson. We are so lucky to have them in our room! Mac is practicing patience and learning to become a therapy dog. We help him by reading to him so he can practice patience. He helps us by listening to us practice our reading fluency.

We have also been writing letters to Mac and reading them to him when he arrives.
Monica's letter really relaxed Mac :)

More pics to come during future visits!

We're glad you're a part of our school family, Mac!

Easter Egg Math

To celebrate Easter and practice our stellar addition/subtraction skills, we had an Easter egg math hunt. All students were assigned a number and had to find all the eggs that equaled their number. The students were fast!

After the hunt, they worked on division and friendship skills as they discussed a fair, equitable way to split the treats.

Happy Easter!

100 Days of First Grade

Today was 100 everything! We stayed quiet for 100 seconds (it may have taken two tries :)), jumped 100 times, did 100 situps, tried to balance on one foot for 100 seconds, enjoyed 100 treats, counted to 100 by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s, solved 100 math problems, made 100 tally marks, read 100 high frequency words, tossed a coin 100 times (tails won!), completed our 100th day of school on your own activity book, and, most importantly, made it through 100 days of hard work in first grade.

Check out what Melissa predicts she'll look like when she's 100 (note the gray hair and cane).
Some of us enjoying our 100 day snacks while wearing our 100 day tally mark hats.
Some of us working on 100 addition problems.

Alma and Nina rolling their die 100 times to see which number wins.
Today was much like the first 99 days of school: busy and productive!!
Carlos ended the day with the perfect comment, "I want 100 more days of first grade!"
I couldn't agree more...
